Apart from its obvious draw, the tiger, Kanha is also home to the leopard, barasingha deer, sambar, spotted deer (chital), the Indian bison (gaur), langur monkeys, bluebull (nilgai), wild dogs (dhole) and wild boar. At one time the population of the barasingha (the 12 horned deer) had plummeted to less than 70 due to uncontrolled poaching and mindless destruction of habitat. However, conservation strategies have paid off and the number has now risen to over 500.The tiger population too has been growing along with that of other wildlife. According to the last census, Kanha's tiger population is currently over 100.
